The one comment or question I get the most during newborn photo sessions has to be how I manage to successfully (and quickly) settle newborn babies! I always want to be able to help out new parents with all the tips and tricks I use, so below are my 4 tips to settling your newborn baby.

WHITE NOISE
White noise creates womb-like sounds that calms babies and can eventually send them to sleep. I used one with my son since birth and he has been a great sleeper.
The white noise machine I use in the studio is the Baby Shusher and it works amazingly, I have a high success rate of getting babies to drift off and use it for every single newborn session. It's been known to send a few dads to sleep during sessions as well!
VIBRATION
Does your newborn fall asleep in the car? A lot do, and it is mostly a result from the vibration which soothes them.
To replicate this in the studio I use the Rockit which is attached to my posing table and creates subtle movement which soothes babies off to a slumber.
In everyday life the Rockit which can also be attached to the crib or pram - so it is portable and handy to take out with you!
WARMTH
Your little one has been snuggled in your belly for 40 weeks sharing all of your body heat, so it's no surprise they prefer to be toasty. In the studio I use a space heater to keep the area I work in nice and warm, especially if we are doing nude photos.
*Note - newborns can't regulate their temperature like we can until they get a little older, so make sure you keep an eye on them so they don't get too hot.
A CALM ENVIRONMENT
If you've had a photo session with me, you'll notice how calm I am even when baby is crying or unsettled. This is because I truly believe that they can pick up on how we are feeling, and if we are tense and stressed, they can also become tense and stressed. In the moment it can be hard to stay calm - I have been there myself at 4am rocking my son for hours - but the more we get worked up, the more unsettled little one will be too.
